FAQs
Is acupuncture safe during pregnancy?
When acupuncture is properly performed by a licensed practitioner, it is safe to receive acupuncture while pregnant. Special care is taken when working with mamas in order to prevent overstimulation and contraindicated points/techniques are avoided.
Acupuncture offers mamas relief from pregnancy-specific issues, that is drug-free and effective.
What is a typical treatment like?
First, we’ll discuss your symptoms and any changes since your last visit. Once you are in a comfortable position, we will begin with light healing touch and gentle application of acupuncture. Your therapy may also include other modalities such as moxibustion, tui na, gua sha.
During the 1st trimester you may lie on your back, then once you are no longer comfortable in this position you may receive acupuncture while lying on your side.
Expect to receive “homework” and self-care recommendations.
How often will I have treatments?
This depends on the issue and the severity. Usually there is greater discomfort during the first and third trimester, so sessions would take place once or twice a week. Since mamas usually feel their best in the 2nd trimester, visits can be tapered to every 2-4 weeks during this time. In the last month (starting at week 36/37) we work on preparing the body for birth with sessions 1-2 times a week.
Postpartum visits usually begin after 3-5 days postpartum, with two visits the first week after birth. Weekly visits continue for another 4-5 weeks, but can continue past this time. There is the option to taper visits to every 2 weeks as mama feels ready. Mamas usually continue with postpartum visits for at least 8-12 weeks.

“I found Chabelly during the darkest time of my life. I had been struggling with irregular menstrual cycles since weaning my first child from nursing, I had surprisingly gotten pregnant despite the irregular cycles, but it ended up being ectopic, and I was emotionally a mess. On top of all of this, I had dealt with chronic migraine for years, and the migraines were once again acting up. The one thing that got me through my period of darkness was my weekly visits to Chabelly. She carries a magic within her -- she seemed to know exactly what my mind, body, and soul needed each particular visit, and I left each session feeling whole and fulfilled again. As an added plus, my migraines finally were at bay. I referred several family members and friends to Chabelly who all were equally as satisfied with her incredible service. When Chabelly told me she was leaving the area, I was devastated but she went out of her way to ensure that I was transferred to another great acupuncturist who came highly recommended. Today I find myself pregnant again and I know it is because of the time I spent with Chabelly allowing my body to properly heal and prepare to nourish another pregnancy.” — F.S.
